The Portal Reopened: NyegeNyege 2025 Celebrated a Decade of Defiance at Kalagala Falls

The 10th anniversary of the NyegeNyege International Music and Arts Festival, themed "Ekigunda Ky'Omuliro " The Gathering of the Flame, was more than a celebration,  it was a potent act of cultural affirmation. Held from November 20th to 23rd, 2025, the festival marked a symbolic and literal return to the Nile's mystical energy, establishing a dramatic new home at Adrift Overland Camp overlooking the Kalagala Falls in Kayunga District.
This edition, positioned as a pilgrimage back to the source, proved why NyegeNyege is arguably Africa's most influential underground culture engine, successfully bridging ancestral rhythm, global electronic innovation, and powerful local economic upliftment.
 The Sacred New Stage: Kalagala Falls
The move to the Kalagala Falls area, a site of profound sacred and natural beauty, was a defining characteristic of the 2025 festival. It marked the festival's fourth venue, but this one felt less like a temporary stop and more like a deliberate establishment of a new spiritual nexus for African creativity.
 A Backdrop of Raw Power: 
The dramatic rapids and sweeping views provided a raw, powerful stage for the four-day, 24-hour program. This connection to the River Nile itself, the ancient vein of life enhanced the theme of "The Gathering of the Flame," evoking ritual and renewal.
  Decade of Diversity: 
The festival brought together over 300 artists and collectives from across Africa and the diaspora, spanning six immersive stages. This line-up was a living museum of boundary pushing genres, from Acholi-tronix and Singeli to Afrohouse and experimental electronica.
The musical fusion was unparalleled, featuring performances from international heavyweights like Skrillex and Flowdan, sharing space with vital Ugandan innovators such as Otim Alpha and local star Suuna Ben, who electrified the crowd with his EDM-infused kinyanyanyanya sound.
Beyond the Beat:
 A Cultural and Economic Force, NyegeNyege 2025 proved it’s far more than just a party, it is a serious platform for cultural production and national tourism strategy.
The Creative Ecosystem
To mark its 10th anniversary, the festival inaugurated two major non-music initiatives:
 The African Electronic Music Conference (AEMC): Launched in collaboration with the French Development Agency (AFD), the AEMC provided a crucial space for artists, producers, and industry players to discuss the future, infrastructure and economic potential of electronic music across the continent.
  Kwetu Kwanza Fashion Pavilion: This major showcase highlighted sustainable fashion and celebrated African designers, integrating style, self-expression and ethical design into the core festival experience.
The Economic Flame
The impact on the local economy in Jinja and the surrounding Kayunga District was immediate and substantial.
Tourism Surge: The festival attracted thousands of attendees, a significant percentage being international visitors, pouring foreign exchange directly into the local economy.
Community-Driven Hospitality: Local accommodation from formal hotels to small guest houses and homestays was fully booked, driving a temporary boom where a room's price could double or triple.
Vibrant Local Enterprise: Local vendors, artisans, and service providers (transport, food, crafts) saw earnings equivalent to an entire month's income over the four-day period, positioning the festival as a powerful engine for local economic growth and a key driver of Uganda's overall tourism strategy.
The Next Chapter
Despite the continuous political and moral debates that often surround the festival, NyegeNyege 2025 stood firm on its founding principles: peace, love, inclusivity and abundant joy.
By choosing the sacred Kalagala Falls, the organizers underscored the festival’s commitment to reclaiming and celebrating African identity and positioning the continent not as a follower but as a pioneer of global underground culture.
The tenth edition was a triumphant, fiery convergence of past and future, tradition and technology. As the last bass lines fade and the dust settles on the banks of the Nile, the message is clear: the portal is open, the flame is lit, and the journey into the next decade of African electronic futurism has just begun.
